Who can be involved in the program?

-
Interested parents, teachers, or other adults who are willing to play a vital
part as team managers.
Why have a Battle of the Books program?

To encourage children to read well written books that are interesting and
entertaining.
-
To give recognition to children who already like to read, but haven't had a
chance to win applause as do children involved in sports, music, and the arts.
-
To help teach children how to be gracious winners or losers.
How does the Battle of the Books work?
-
Interested adults organize book lovers in the fourth through sixth grades into
teams of up to 8 children.
-
Team managers will fill out forms which they have picked up at Central, any of
the seven branches*, or the bookmobile of the Washington County Free Library.
They will give the information requested about their members and the team name.
-
Team managers turn the forms in to their local branch of the Washington County
Free Library and will receive their packet of information.
-
Teams read the specified 20 titles selected by the library for the contest.
-
A written competition based on questions about the 20 books will be held from
which the top eight teams will be selected for verbal competition.
-
The top eight teams will engage in a verbal battle about the 20 books until one
team is the undisputed winner.
