Faces of the Civil War Book Club

Adult Services Branch: Clear Spring Clear Spring Library Chris Copley (winner of last year's Washington County Free Library's adult short story award) is presenting two free workshops to help people get their short stories finished in time for the 2012 deadline of March 23rd.
The free workshops will be held at Leonard P. Snyder Memorial Library in Clear Spring. Chris will present this free, short story-writing seminar series for area residents over two Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 3. The seminar will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. Call 301-842-2730 to register.

From Bebop to Bossa Nova,swing into Spring with the Mike Gellar Band. Local Jazz guitarist Mike Gellar and vocalist Christiana Drapkin entertain with a lively concert of Jazz, Standards, some cool Bebop lines, and lilting Bossa Novas. They are joined by Bob Shann on bass, Dominic Smith on drums, and special guest, clarinetist Anita Thomas. Come and give a listen.

Adult Services Branch: Hancock This class will introduce computers to first-time computer users. In this class we discuss computer hardware and software, how to turn on and operate your computer. Participants will begin working with Windows 7 Operating system including looking at the desktop, launching programs, working with my computer and document libraries, and the control panel. Also learn to create and organize folders, save and open documents, and much more.

War of 1812 Exhibit

Adult Services Branch: Boonsboro Boonsboro Library The United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. Much of the War of 1812 occurred on Maryland soil and in the waters of the Chesapeake. The events of this war unified our nation, inspired the writing of the national anthem, and secured our independence from Great Britain. This exhibit, provided by the Baltimore National Heritage Area, brings these events to life and revisits this important turning point in our history.
Join us at the Boonsboro Branch Library on Friday, March 9 at 6:00 PM as local historian Roger Keller presents "Maryland and the War of 1812." Call 301-432-5723 to reserve a seat.

The Importance of Railroads in the Civil War

Adult Services Branch: Sharpsburg Dr. Alan Hedges, a retired professor, will talk about the important role railroads played in the American Civil War and how trains factored into the successes and failures of local campaigns such as Antietam and Gettysburg.
