Join us to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with a variety of programming throughout the month of May. May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Like most commemorative months, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month originated with Congress. In 1992, Congress passed Public Law 102-450, which annually designated May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants (Library of Congress).

To celebrate, WCFL’s Adult Services has a number of programs planned throughout May. Check them out below:

  • Make and Take 2 Go – Lotus Lantern Hoi An in Vietnam is known as the City of Lanterns and on the 14th day of each lunar month, they celebrate the Hoi An Lantern Festival. This Make and Take 2 Go kit will include the templates for the papercraft lantern and glue dots for assembly. It will also include cultural and historical information to learn about Hoi An and the Lantern Festival. Register here.
  • Virtual Sticker Board A mystery virtual sticker board. The completed image is related to Japanese culture. Access the Sticker Board here!
  • Reel Talk In this month's edition of Reel Talk, Katelyn from the Fletcher branch will introduce you to a range of films that explore Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage on the big screen. View the video here!
