Soul of a People: movie about the WPA Writers Project, and meet the author, David Taylor Join Author and Filmmaker David Taylor for this Documentary Film Viewing and Discussion

"Soul of a People: Writing America's Story" is about 1930s America and the people of the WPA Writers' Project. The 90-minute film explores a handful of people who went to work for the government, describing their hometowns in a series of travel guides that became classics. They included a number of writers who went on to influence American literature and culture in the decades that followed: Zora Neale Hurston, John Cheever, Richard Wright, Anzia Yezierska, Ralph Ellison, crime writer Jim Thompson, and Studs Terkel, among others.

The film features these later-famous authors as well as lesser knowns with powerful stories. It includes interviews with WPA writers Studs Terkel and Stetson Kennedy, as well as authors Dagoberto Gilb, David Bradley and well-known historian Douglas Brinkley.
The book "Soul of a People: The WPA Writers' Project Uncovers Depression America" (Wiley, 2009) explores those stories and more, in greater depth.
The film premiered on the Smithsonian Channel last fall and was nominated for a 2010 Writers' Guild of America award for documentary.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Lecture: The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe on Monday, April 19 at 7:00 pm

Lecture: The Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe on Monday, April 19 at 7:00 pm

Edgar Allan Poe invented the detective story, perfected the horror tale, and first articulated the theory of the modern short story as well as the idea of pure poetry. Combining stylistic virtuosity with a deep understanding of the darkness of the human heart, Edgar Allan Poe's stories and poems have haunted readers for more than 150 years. (from the NEA website)
The 3rd Annual Washington County Big Read focuses the spotlight on Edgar Allan Poe as the county reads The Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Join Jeff Korman from the Enoch Pratt free Library for "Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe."
After having left Richmond on a trip north in late September, 1849, Poe was found semi-conscious in a Baltimore street on October 4 and died three days later.  For almost 160 years more than a dozen theories have attempted to explain what really happened to the famous author and poet.
Discuss the theories and speculate on a recent notion that includes the possibility that the detective story’s creator was murdered!  View letters written by Poe and other interesting material from the collection of the State Library Resource Center.

Please call 301-739-3250 ext 136 and let us know you plan to attend.
