In brief, the Battle of the Books is a program to encourage middle readers to read well-written, fun and thought-provoking books. The program involves children in grades 4-6 forming teams with up to eight members; an adult manager is needed for each team.Once the teams are formed, the library assigns twenty books for every team to read. After signing up in November, the teams have until the first week of March to read and recall as much as they can from the set of twenty books.A Battle of the Books written competition is held in the first week of March.During that written round, teams record their answers to forty book-based questions on a special answer sheet. These sheets are then reviewed by the librarians; the top eight scoring teams advance to a final verbal round. In this final round, forty more questions are asked of the teams. The verbal competition requires the team captains to stand up and speak their team’s answers to the librarians.Trophies are given to the top three placing teams with the top team receiving recognition on a plaque hung in the Children’s Department.
