Songwriting Workshops for Writing Skills and Literacy

Jennie Avila has been presenting songwriting workshops for 25 years in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland. She uses music as a tool to enhance literacy, teach writing skills, and inspire creativity and confidence.

Kindergarten to Third Grade Workshop • 10:30 - 11:15 AM

Children are inspired with fun word and vocal exercises. We write a song together by using our 5 senses to "pay attention" to our experiences of the day, sing, move, learn about new instruments, and create a group verse for a song.

Fourth Grade to Sixth Grade Workshop • 11:30 AM - 12:15 PM

We will discuss the meaning and origins of a traditional song and a funny version of that song, sing, analyze verse structure, and collaborate to write a new verse. Participants will be divided into groups to continue writing "parody of the parody" and present another fun, new verse.

This program is limited to 25 participants on a first come, first served basis. Guardians are asked to stay throughout the workshop.

This program is sponsored by the Washington County Arts Council.
