Curbside Pickup Services

Washington County Free Library branches throughout the county will soon begin curbside pickup services and have reopened book drops as the second phase of a gradual reopening plan.

During the first phase of this plan, limited staff have been working to clean and disinfect library facilities and materials, and create a new service model to efficiently and safely serve the Washington County community. During this time, staff have been provided personal protective equipment and workstations have been reconfigured to maintain social distancing.

Curbside Pickup Service

As of June 1, library staff will begin the process of calling patrons to schedule pickups for holds on materials placed before the library closure in March.
As of June 8, staff will begin calling patrons who placed holds during the library closure to schedule a time for item pickup.
As of July 6, the option to schedule a time for pickup using an online calendar system is now available.

As of June 8, staff will begin the process of scheduling walk up pickups at the Fletcher Branch Library.

These pickups will be structured much like the curbside pickup and need to be scheduled with staff ahead of time. Patrons will call when they arrive and staff will place bagged materials on a table for collection. Again, please do not approach library staff during Walk Up Pickup Service.

To Place Holds

To place holds on materials at this time, visit the online catalog available through our website, Log in using your card number and pin to browse or search materials and place holds.

If you would like to call to place a hold or have questions about placing holds for curbside pickup, please call 301-739-3250 ext. 300 (10-7 Monday-Thursday, 10-6 Friday, and 10-2 Saturday-Sunday) or call your branch library.

All Washington County Free Library book drops are now open for returns. Returns will only be accepted through book drops; please do not leave library materials outside of library buildings or on the curbside pickup tables.

No fines have been accruing since the library’s closure on March 17.

Washington County Free Library is taking strict measures to ensure the safety of its patrons and staff by following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidelines. All WCFL materials have been quarantined for at least 120 hours (5 days). As an extra precaution, patrons utilizing the Curbside Pickup to check out materials may decide to quarantine items for an additional 24 hours before use.

Other Available Services

Library customers can visit the eLibrary page here on our website for unlimited 24/7 access to ebooks, movies, magazines, comics, TV, research databases, and more for all ages. Online registration is also available for new users to access our online resources with a temporary “E card.” To register for an E Card, register for an account using the online library catalog.

Reference librarians are also available to answer questions via phone 10-7 Monday-Thursday, 10-6 Friday, and 10-2 Saturday-Sunday as of June 1. Call 301-739-3250 ext. 300 for research assistance, information about community resources, and help connecting to eLibrary services. Reference staff have also created a Library @ Home page on our website with lists of resources for dealing with stress, applying for unemployment over the phone, and more.

Virtual library programs, such as storytime videos shared on branch library Facebook pages, are also available. Please visit our website and online calendar for information about upcoming virtual book discussion groups, craft programs, and more.

The health and safety of Washington County Free Library customers and staff continue to be of utmost importance. WCFL has been diligent in following the advice of our federal, state, and local public health officials which is now allowing us to provide limited in-person library services.

Please be courteous to library staff as we begin this new service model. There are thousands of holds currently in the system and it may take time to schedule each pickup with limited staff.

Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of the library during this time.
