Very little has been written about the Underground Railroad activity in the Smithsburg area, however recent research has shown that there is strong evidence that Smithsburg and Cavetown were both stops on the underground railroad, as well as nearby communities like Wolfesville, Beaver Creek, and Ringgold. Jefferson Boyer will examine both positive aspects of the Underground Railroad, and negative aspects like the "soul drivers:" local men who captured fugitive enslaved people in order to collect ransom money.
