Women of Smithsburg March 2023

Torn parchment and paper with line drawing of civil war-era women to left and right of program title

Join us on Tuesday, March 14 at 7 PM for a presentation

Shortly after the start of the Civil War in April 1861, the daily lives of the local people were thrown into a state of upheaval that didn't end until the war was over.  There were constant threats of invasion, shortages of basic goods and supplies, and the aftermath of the major battles of Gettysburg and Antietam.  Using eyewitness accounts, period newspaper records, and local lore, this lecture will examine what the war years meant for local women. Presented by Jefferson Boyer, president, Smithsburg Historical Society.
