Librarian I (FT) – Collection Management (Fletcher Branch)

Description

The Washington County Free Library (WCFL) seeks a full-time Librarian I to support the Library’s Collection Management Department. Under the supervision of the Head of Collection Management, this position performs a variety of professional library duties, including the selection of library materials, original and copy cataloging, weeding, collection assessment and maintenance, and other collection management activities. The Librarian I also collaborates with staff throughout the library system to help ensure collections meet the needs of WCFL branches and the communities they serve.

Location: Fletcher Branch (Hagerstown), Washington County Free Library. 

Hours: Full-time; 40 hours per week (exempt); varied days and hours during WCFL’s regular operating schedule, including evenings and weekends; position subject to system-wide reassignment. 

Salary range: Anticipated hiring rate will be $25.28 per hour; benefits provided. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

This list is representative and does not include all the duties this position entails: 

  • Under the supervision of the Head of Collection Management, is responsible for the selection of library materials in the assigned formats for all branches.
  • Assists the Head of Collection Management with the evaluation and assessment of collection needs by community.
  • Assists with weeding and other collection maintenance activities as needed.
  • Performs original and copy cataloging in all formats as needed or assigned.
  • Understands and efficiently utilizes appropriate cataloging software and technology for the creation of catalog records.
  • Collects and maintains statistics, as assigned.
  • Monitors the mending cart for assigned materials and determines whether to replace, repair, or withdraw materials; repairs damaged library materials as needed or assigned.
  • Assists with system-wide inventory as required.
  • Attends relevant conferences, workshops, and other training opportunities for the purposes of ongoing professional growth and development and the completion of required continuing education credits.
  • Acts as project manager or participates in larger library initiatives, projects, or fundraisers.
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of librarianship, with particular reference to collection development and cataloging.
  • Thorough knowledge of current library cataloging, automation technology, and trends.
  • Thorough knowledge of physical and digital formats of library materials and resources.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and execute work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with contacts encountered in carrying out the responsibilities of the position.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively as part of a team toward achievement of common goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of reference sources, authors, literature, publishers, and publications. 
  • Familiarity with appropriate library software, including, but not limited to, Polaris, Ingram, Midwest Tape, OCLC, and WebDewey.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines, multi-task, prioritize, and to be flexible as needed. 

Qualifications & Requirements 

  • Possession of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • A valid driver’s license and a willingness and ability to travel within Washington County as needed.
  • Must be eligible for Maryland Public Librarian Certification.
