Branch Supervisor / Library Associate II (PT) – Hancock Branch

About the Position

The Washington County Free Library (WCFL) seeks an organized and flexible Branch Supervisor for the Hancock Branch. This professional-level position provides day-to-day leadership for assigned public service areas within a library branch. The Branch Supervisor oversees service-desk operations, directs the work of branch staff, and ensures consistent, high-quality customer service across designated functional areas. Work at this level involves managing operational activities, developing and carrying out library programs and supporting general branch program delivery, and maintaining service quality within established library policies, procedures, and system-wide initiatives. The position exercises judgment in resolving routine to moderately complex patron and staff issues, provides training and performance feedback, and contributes to branch-level planning under the guidance of the Regional Branch Manager. Supervision is received from the Regional Branch Manager.

Location: Hancock Branch (Hancock, MD) of the Washington County Free Library, with required coverage at other WCFL locations as scheduling needs arise. Position subject to system-wide reassignment.

Hours: Part-time, 20 hours per week (non-exempt); varied schedule during WCFL’s regular operating hours, including evenings and weekends. 

Salary: Anticipated hiring rate will be $23.88/hour; benefits provided. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the daily operations of the assigned branch library, under the direction of the Regional Branch Manager or department head.
  • Creates and monitors weekly desk schedules and resolves any staffing issues to meet branch needs.
  • Reports facility issues and assists in resolving issues as needed.
  • Carries out and explains circulation policies and procedures to patrons; resolves problems and concerns in a positive manner which promotes and reflects exceptional customer service practices.
  • Assists patrons with accessing, locating, and requesting materials and with finding information of all kinds and provides readers’ advisory.
  • Assists patrons with various technological needs as required.
  • Assesses community needs and creates and implements programming for all ages at the assigned branch.
  • Participates in the evaluation and assessment of collection needs by community as directed.
  • Participates in outreach activities or community events as needed or required.
  • Works in other branches as required, at the discretion of the Regional Branch Manager.
  • Attends relevant conferences, workshops, and other training opportunities for the purposes of ongoing professional growth and development and the completion of required continuing education credits.
  • Works a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.

Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of public library practices and procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate community needs, interests, and expectations as these relate to the programming and collections.
  • Sufficient information retrieval skills to meet the requirements of the position and knowledge of available research materials.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide readers’ advisory service.
  • Ability to accurately handle cash and cash receipts, to operate a cash register and/or equivalent technology, and to make change.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to direct and guide work, train assigned staff and communicate with library staff system wide.
  • Strong customer services skills, a commitment to public service, and the ability to effectively and creatively solve problems, including the ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize work, determine priorities, multi-task, make decisions, and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility, positive attitude, and good judgment.
  • Ability to develop and conduct age-appropriate programs, events, and activities as needed, and to perform effectively in front of children, teens, and adults.
  • Ability to effectively access and utilize relevant technology and the Internet to perform all required tasks, and to effectively provide related instruction to patrons as needed.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Qualifications and Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree and completion of the Library Associates Training Institute (LATI) within two years of appointment, as prescribed by the State of Maryland.  A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution may be used in the place of LATI.

Progressive relevant experience in public libraries at a level sufficient to meet the requirements of the position; experience in directing and assigning work is preferred. 

A valid driver’s license in good standing.
